BiCOM Inc. is one of the few US medical device companies that has been experiencing staggering growth within last 4 years. Since obtaining FDA clearance for its unique glaucoma IOP eye test through the Eyelid – Diaton Tonometer, the company has increased direct sales force and now covers every US state.  Internationally, Diaton Tonometer is currently available in over 60 countries through various medical device distributors.  CEO of BiCOM, Roman Iospa predicts for healthcare sector and medical diagnostic technology sales to increase.

Glaucoma Eye Test Diaton

Glaucoma Eye Test Diaton Tonometer

BiCOM has been in business for 18 years and has managed to build a solid brand around this new and unique transpalpebral tonometry technology which allows to determine intraocular pressure (IOP) through the EYELID http://www.tonometerdiaton.com .  Traspalpebral (Diaton) Tonometry clientele consists of optometrists and ophthalmologists, military, nursing homes, hospitals, emergency rooms, general medical practitioners and family physicians, as well as some referred patients requiring day or night eye pressure monitoring.

In an interview with Roman Iospa, Chief Executive of BiCOM said, – “We plan to grow Diaton tonometer sales through our broader expansion internationally and continue to gain greater penetration of the market nationally, mainly due to greater awareness and an invaluable addition of new talent with new contacts and years of experience from market leading companies such as Alcon (NYSE:ACL), Abbott Laboratories (NYSE:ABT), Medtronic (NYSE:MDT), CIBA Vision, Novartis (NYSE:NVS), Kimberly-Clark (NYSE:KMB), Johnson & Johnson (NYSE:JNJ), GlaxoSmithKline (NYSE:GSK), Bausch & Lomb, Advanced Medical Optics, Pfizer (NYSE:PFE) and Allergan (NYSE:AGN) just to name a few…”

“Our transpalpebral (through the eyelid) Diaton tonometry is unique, effective and is irreplaceable in various situations where any other corneal tonometry methods (Goldmann, Tonopen, Air puff) simply can not be used”.  Transpalpebral approach is ideal for patients with corneal concerns like conjunctivitis, cornea pathology, keratitis, keratocone, keratoplastik, edema, erosion, high degree of ametropy or astigmatism, keratoprosthesis, or acquiring IOP following laser refractive (LASIK, LASEK, PRK) and other corneal surgeries, “Diaton tonometer has a number of indisputable advantages of measuring through the upper lid and over the sclera (no contact with cornea) without need of anesthetic drops, making the IOP measuring process handy and economical for the doctor and comfortable for the patient,” Mr. Iospa said.

An increase in sales can be attributed to a proper business plan execution and advanced marketing techniques by BiCOM management team and a new set of clinical trials presented by reputable and well-known doctors at various industry events.

In an interview with Ocular Surgery News at the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO) meeting, Dr. Mark Latina said IOP measurements with the Diaton tonometer are equivalent to Goldmann applanation tonometry. The Diaton device offers a safe, noncontact method of measuring pressure via the eyelid, he said.

“It works,” said Dr. Mark Latina, a glaucoma specialist and the inventor of Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty (SLT), “It gives you a reasonable estimation of the pressure without having to anesthetize the cornea through a transpalpebral approach.”

Results of clinical studies, video presentations and articles are available on the company’s website: http://www.TonometerDiaton.com

We have asked Mr. Iospa if President Barack Obama’s healthcare plan will have an effect on the future Diaton tonometer sales forecasts, to which Mr. Iospa has replied,  “In short, if it will have an effect, only a positive one.  Evidence suggests that preventive medical care through early diagnosis will save money in the long run and Obama’s health care plan aims to do just that.  We have a diagnostic device on the market and with early detection and treatment, glaucoma can in most cases be controlled and vision preserved.  Per Obama’s plan more people will have medical insurance and will need to be screened, which in turn will create more demand for our diagnostic product.”
BiCOM, a privately held company has increased its outlook for 2009 due to its plans to expand the product reach domestically and internationally. A growing need for glaucoma screenings in the aging population globally, combined with the unique transpalpebral method, allows BiCOM to position itself strongly within the growing eyecare diagnostic and medical devices industry.

BiCOM management also confirmed their expansion plans to introduce two additional medical products this year, a result of a number of earlier investments BiCOM made into medical innovation; details and amounts were not disclosed.

Barack Obama, President of the United States of America proclaims March 1 through March 7, 2009, as Save Your Vision Week. BiCOM Inc home of Glaucoma Eye Test Diaton – non-contact Glaucoma Eye Test through the Eyelid is prepared to assist with vision screenings. Roman Iospa, CEO of BiCOM comments on Presidents support of glaucoma screenings. Early diagnosis and timely treatment are critical to minimize vision loss from eye diseases.

Proclamation by the president of the United Stated of America addresses the important issue of Blindness and visual impairment that affects millions of Americans. Early diagnosis and timely treatment are critical to minimize vision loss from eye diseases. During Save Your Vision Week – Barack Obama encourages all Americans to take action to prevent their vision loss.

BiCOM Inc. home of Glaucoma Eye Test Diaton Tonometer (IOP through the Eyelid), has been a long supporter of preventive glaucoma screenings. At a recent free glaucoma screening event where BiCOM in conjunction with SAVE Program (Sight for a Vision Exchange) and The Congressional Glaucoma Caucus Foundation conducted at New York City Children’s Services in honor of African American Heritage Celebration has revealed many with elevated intraocular pressure (IOP) a major risk factor for glaucoma. Patients were referred to an ophthalmologist Dr. Lynnette P. Williams-Young a glaucoma specialist for further evaluation.

Unfortunately, most people have limited knowledge of blinding eye disorders. Based on National Eye Institute 2005 study, only eight percent of respondents knew that glaucoma, a condition that can damage the optic nerve and cause vision loss and blindness, strikes without early warning. Similarly, glaucoma also begins as a silent vision threat; as per Prevent Blindness America, it is estimated that of those Americans that have glaucoma, only half know they have it. It is estimated that 60 million Americans are at risk for developing glaucoma.

Everyone should be screened, especially with availability of new non-invasive (over the eyelid) glaucoma screening technology aka “Glaucoma Eye TestDiaton tonometer available to optometrists, ophthalmologists and general physicians, enabling doctors to quickly and painlessly screen individuals at risk.

Several demographic groups are at higher risk for visual impairment, including teenagers, diabetics, Hispanics, African Americans, and the economically disadvantaged. Older Americans are more susceptible to eye conditions such as age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, and glaucoma. Children need regular vision screenings because vision disorders left untreated during childhood can lead to permanent visual impairment during adulthood.

President Obama stated, “Eye disease knows no bounds, and every American should take steps to protect his or her eyesight.”

To remind Americans about the importance of safeguarding their eyesight, the Congress, by joint resolution approved December 30, 1963, as amended (77 Stat. 629; 36 U.S.C. 138), has authorized and requested the President to proclaim the first week in March of each year as “Save Your Vision Week.”

“I’m pleased to see that President Barack Obama, with only weeks in the office is addressing an important issue of blindness, its early detection and timely treatment. My whole team at BiCOM Inc., and our partners are ready to continue our efforts and act on a larger scale by reaching out to many more people through awareness, training, glaucoma screening events and making “Glaucoma Eye Test” Diaton tonometer available to all that are willing to participate,“ said Roman Iospa, CEO of BiCOM Inc.

From the website of the White House: http://www.whitehouse.gov/the_press_office/Save-Your-Vision-Week-2009/

NOW, THEREFORE, I, BARACK OBAMA, President of the United States of America, do hereby proclaim March 1 through March 7, 2009, as Save Your Vision Week. During this time, I invite eye care professionals, teachers, members of the media, and all organizations dedicated to preserving eyesight to join in activities that will raise awareness of vision diseases and disorders.”

Diaton Tonometer

Worlds Only Glaucoma Eye Test Through The Lid

MEDICA 2008 presented new products, services and processes for use in doctors’ surgeries and hospitals. With unique Tonometer Diaton, BiCOM is challenging Glaucoma. The “sneak thief of sight”, it carries an increasing threat of preventable blindness worldwide. Diaton allows for screenings without the use of anesthetic drops and most importantly, no contact with the cornea. This makes screening easier than ever before, especially for children and seniors. Tonometer Diaton measures intraocular pressure (IOP) through the upper eyelid, over sclera, which in turn does not require correction for corneal thickness and reduces possibilities of infection.

Mr. Roman Iospa, CEO, BiCOM Inc. commentedMEDICA 2008 has allowed international exposure for our unique medical device. After following up with the people we have met, we will definitely be launching Diaton in additional countries.

Portability and simplicity make Tonometer Diaton ideal for a wide range of uses: mass screening of the population, at the patient’s bedside, in geriatric homes, in children hospitals, for the military and for home use.

Diaton Tonometer is intended for use by Inpatient & Outpatient Clinics such as Hospitals, Emergency Rooms, Nursing & Elderly Homes, General & Specialty Practitioners as well as Ophthalmologists and Optometrists.

60 million Americans are at risk for developing glaucoma, as per The University of Washington Department of Ophthalmology. Regretfully, such health issues are only brought to greater awareness once public figures such as New York Governor David Paterson become affected. Governor Paterson was recently diagnosed with glaucoma and has undergone multiple surgeries, one of which was to relieve the pressure in the eye. http://www.GlaucomaEyeTest.com

Glaucoma Eye Test - Diaton tonometer

Glaucoma Eye Test - Diaton tonometer

Glaucoma does not discriminate. Everyone should be screened for glaucoma. Elevated intraocular pressure (eye pressure) is the major risk factor for glaucoma. Early screening and detection may prevent blindness. New unique device Tonometer Diaton is the only device on the market that measures intraocular pressure painlessly through the eyelid.

Although glaucoma cannot be prevented, early detection can prevent such severe outcomes like surgery, loss of visual field and blindness. Glaucoma is an eye disease which is characterized by optic nerve damage, often due to elevated eye pressure, which can lead to blindness if undetected and left untreated early on.

Prevention can be done by a simple screening of intraocular pressure (IOP), which is a primary risk factor for glaucoma. The higher the level of eye pressure, the greater the likelihood of optic nerve damage and loss of visual field. Patients should be aware of this issue and request their physicians to screen their eye pressure routinely.

Glaucoma is often referred to as the “silent thief of sight”. This is because, most often glaucoma presents no symptoms and will only be recognized when there is significant permanent loss of vision, unless it is caught by simple screening of intraocular pressure in its earliest stages.

BiCOM Inc., with its FDA approved unique Glaucoma Eye Test (Tonometer Diaton http://www.TonometerDiaton.com) has been creating glaucoma awareness, reaching out to millions worldwide through conjoined efforts with World Glaucoma Association (WGA) & World Glaucoma Patient Association (WGPA), as well as Health Action Group and The Lions Clubs.

BiCOM’s Diaton Tonometers are irreplaceable for mass screenings in children and adults. Unlike other methods of tonometry which measure through the cornea, Diaton Tonometer is the only medical device on the market that measures intraocular pressure through the eyelid. Measuring through the eyelid without contact with cornea makes this eye exam simple, quick and painless, requiring no sterilization and no use of anesthetic drops.

If Glaucoma is detected early, most patients only require medication to control eye pressure and stop optic nerve damage from occurring.

Once the optic nerve is damaged, the impairment is irreversible. Therefore, once loss of vision has begun, that vision can never be restored. At this point, treatment can only maintain whatever vision remains. Unfortunately, many patients are also unaware that vision loss has already begun because glaucoma starts effecting visual field from the periphery, inward to the center, allowing the patient to compensate by simply turning the head.

BiCOM Inc., cooperates with national and international for-profit and non-for-profit organizations to increase awareness and promote mass screenings with the help of Diaton tonometer. Due to the limited ratio of patients to ophthalmic and optometric professionals, many primary care doctors and family practitioners are already joining the efforts to educate and screen greater numbers of patients for elevated intraocular pressure, and thereafter referring patients at higher risk to the eye care professionals.

The goal is to identify patients with increased intraocular pressure before any nerve damage has occurred so no vision loss ever develops. To protect your vision, have your eyes examined on a regular basis.

BiCOM Inc. in conjunction with The Lions Clubs held an educational/screening event to detect and prevent glaucoma using hand held tonometer Diaton which screens through the eyelid without use of anesthetic drops. The event was very successful, and the Lions Club members learned how to further their attempts to educate and screen the public in order to prevent blindness. Lions Club members are planning to add painless Diaton tonometry to their health screening events.

Diaton Tonometry is new and unique approach to measuring intraocular (eye) pressure (IOP) THROUGH THE EYELID – no contact with the cornea, no anesthesia or sterilization is required. BiCOM’s pen-like, hand-held, portable device is perfect for measuring eye pressure in children and adults and can be used by individuals without prior medical background.

Lions Clubs are a network of 1.3 million men and women in 202 countries who work together to answer the needs that challenge communities around the world. Since 1917, they have been known for working to end preventable blindness, a cause BiCOM greatly supports. Lions participate in locally-based events to help those less fortunate. “Every Lions Club group should use this device!” raved Emil Adinolfi, President of a Staten Island group. “If every Lions Club worldwide were to add this small device, we could do screenings for not only the members, but the public”, Mr. Adinolfi added.

This device is irreplaceable for mass glaucoma screenings. Lions Clubs plan to go to churches, synagogues and do their own local outreach events.

In 1925, Helen Keller challenged Lions to become “knights of the blind in the crusade against darkness” during the association’s international convention. Today, Lions are recognized worldwide for their service to the blind and visually impaired. Lions help with sight conservation through eyeglass recycling, sight partnerships and countless other sight services. The Lions ambitious SightFirst Program has restored sight through cataract surgeries, prevented serious vision loss and improved eye care services for hundreds of millions of adults and children. To continue and expand this effort, Lions have launched Campaign SightFirst II, with a goal of raising at least US$150 million.

Undiagnosed and untreated, glaucoma can cause blindness. Glaucoma is the leading cause of blindness in all age groups – from babies to senior citizens. Everyone needs to get diagnosed to preserve eyesight.

Mr. Roman Iospa, CEO of BiCOM Inc., has pointed out, “With the introduction of our unique tonometer Diaton, we’re proud to challenge Glaucoma, a “silent thief of sight”, that carries an ever increasing threat of causing blindness as the aging population is growing in US and abroad.”

BiCOM Team has recently actively participated in the first World Glaucoma Day where its efforts have resulted in reaching millions worldwide.

Because Diaton tonometer is easy to use and portable, outreach programs are a great opportunity to get the word out about preventable blindness. BiCOM plans to provide additional support and incentives to clubs that add Diaton tonometry – “Glaucoma Eye Test” to their activities. BiCOM hopes to work in conjunction with Lions Clubs wordwide to make sure glaucoma is detected and treated at the earliest stage possible.
