In an interview with Ocular Surgery News at the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO) meeting, Dr. Mark Latina said IOP measurements with the Diaton tonometer are equivalent to Goldmann applanation tonometry. The Diaton device offers a safe, noncontact method of measuring pressure via the eyelid, he said.

“It works,” said Dr. Mark Latina, a glaucoma specialist and the inventor of Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty (SLT), “It gives you a reasonable estimation of the pressure without having to anesthetize the cornea through a transpalpebral approach.”

We have asked Mr. Iospa if President Barack Obama’s healthcare plan will have an effect on the future Diaton tonometer sales forecasts, to which Mr. Iospa has replied,  “In short, if it will have an effect, only a positive one.  Evidence suggests that preventive medical care through early diagnosis will save money in the long run and Obama’s health care plan aims to do just that.  We have a diagnostic device on the market and with early detection and treatment, glaucoma can in most cases be controlled and vision preserved.  Per Obama’s plan more people will have medical insurance and will need to be screened, which in turn will create more demand for our diagnostic product.”

United States Senator Charles Schumer Declares World Glaucoma Day in New York State, BiCOM Inc. supports with Global Awareness Campaign

BiCOM Inc., a global distributor of Diaton Tonometer (non-invasive Tonometry through eyelid) is answering the call from World Glaucoma Association (WGA) and World Glaucoma Patient Association (WGPA) by advising and guiding all of its distributors located in over 30 countries in North and South America, Europe, Asia and Middle East to participate in the World Glaucoma Day on March 12th through Screening and Awareness campaigns.

BiCOM Inc., a New York based company, in conjunction with NYC Department of Transportation (DOT), will be holding an Awareness and Screening Event at the Staten Island Ferry Terminal – over 100,000 people travel by this ferry daily. Unfortunately, most people have limited knowledge of blinding eye disorders. Based on National Eye Institute 2005 study, only eight percent of respondents knew that glaucoma, a condition that can damage the optic nerve and cause vision loss and blindness, strikes without early warning. Similarly, glaucoma also begins as a silent vision threat; as per Prevent Blindness America, it is estimated that of those Americans that have glaucoma, only half know they have it. It is estimated that 60 million Americans are at risk for developing glaucoma.
